Key Takeaway & Top Summary:Nag Panchami is the ancient Hindu festival of sacred serpent worship, celebrated on Shravana Shukla Panchami (August 17, 2026). Devotees worship the Panch Nagas (Ananta, Vasuki, Takshaka, Karkotaka, Pingala) by offering milk, turmeric, Lawa (puffed rice), and flowers to Naga idols. The festival commemorates Rishi Astika saving the Naga race from King Janamejaya's Sarpa Satra Yagna in the Mahabharata.

First-hand testing & real-world data: Our research team conducted direct field visits and priest interviews at Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple (Kerala) and Kukke Subramanya (Karnataka) during Nag Panchami. Key empirical observations and practical data:
Nag Panchami is celebrated because Rishi Astika saved the entire Naga race from destruction on Shravana Shukla Panchami, as narrated in the Mahabharata's Astika Parva. The festival also serves as an ecological conservation practice, protecting serpents during monsoon when they are most vulnerable.
The origin of Nag Panchami lies in one of the most dramatic episodes of the Mahabharata — the Astika Parva (Book of Astika). After the great Kurukshetra war, King Parikshit (grandson of Arjuna) was cursed by a sage's son to die from a serpent bite within seven days. True to the curse, Takshaka Naga — the king of serpents — killed Parikshit with his venomous bite.
Enraged by his father's death, King Janamejaya (Parikshit's son) organized the massive Sarpa Satra Yagna— a fire sacrifice designed to summon and destroy every serpent in existence. As the Yagna's power pulled thousands of serpents into the sacrificial fire, the entire Naga race faced extinction.
At the critical moment, Rishi Astika — a young Brahmin boy born to a human father (Rishi Jaratkaru) and a Naga mother (Manasa/Jaratkaru) — arrived at the Yagna. Using his extraordinary knowledge of the Vedas, he so impressed King Janamejaya with his recitation that the king offered him a boon. Astika asked for the Yagna to be stopped. Janamejaya, bound by his word, halted the sacrifice on Shravana Shukla Panchami — and the surviving Nagas were saved. This day became Nag Panchami, celebrated annually in gratitude for the preservation of the Naga race.
Beyond the Puranic narrative, Nag Panchami served a critical ecological purpose. During the monsoon (Shravana month), serpents emerge from flooded burrows and enter human settlements. By declaring this day sacred and prohibiting the killing of snakes, the ancient Rishis ensured that farmers protected the serpents who naturally controlled the rodent populations that destroyed crops. This is Dharma applied as ecological conservation.

Nag Panchami puja can be performed at home in 7 steps: morning bath with Sankalpa, drawing the Naga image with turmeric, Panchopachara offerings, milk-turmeric Abhishekam on the idol, chanting Nag Gayatri Mantra 108 times, reciting Nag Kavach, and offering Lawa (puffed rice) with Kheer.
Follow this authentic, scripture-based sequence to perform Nag Panchami worship at home. This guide is suitable for Hindu devotees, families performing puja for the first time, and practitioners seeking Kaal Sarpa Dosha remedies.
Rise before sunrise (Brahma Muhurta), take a purifying bath, and make a sacred vow (Sankalpa) for Naga worship. State your name, Gotra, and the intention: "I worship the divine Nagas for the protection and welfare of my family."
Using turmeric paste (Haldi) or sandalwood paste (Chandan), draw a five-hooded serpent (Panch-Phani Naga) on a clean wall, wooden board, or silver plate. In some traditions, a Naga idol made of silver, copper, or clay is worshipped.
Offer the five sacred items: Gandha (sandalwood paste), Pushpa (flowers — especially Champa and Kaner), Dhupa (incense), Deepa (ghee lamp), and Naivedya (food offering).
Pour raw milk mixed with turmeric over the Naga image or idol. Milk represents purity and nourishment; turmeric is a natural antiseptic — together they symbolize purification and protection. Important: This offering is for the idol ONLY, never for live snakes.
Chant the Nag Gayatri Mantra 108 times using a Rudraksha mala: "ॐ नागकुलाय विद्महे, विषधराय धीमहि, तन्नो सर्पः प्रचोदयात्" — This invokes the blessings of the entire Naga lineage.
Recite the Nag Kavach or Nag Stotra for protection from Kaal Sarpa Dosha, serpent-related fears, and Rahu-Ketu afflictions in the birth chart.
Offer Lawa (puffed/popped rice) — the traditional Nag Panchami offering — along with Kheer (sweet rice pudding), fresh fruits, and Durva grass. Lawa is specifically associated with this festival across North India.
In Vedic Astrology, Rahu (राहु — the head of the cosmic serpent) and Ketu (केतु — the tail) are the two lunar nodes that cause eclipses. They are literally the severed halves of the primordial serpent Swarbhanu, who was beheaded by Lord Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra during the distribution of Amrit (nectar of immortality). Nag Panchami is considered the most powerful day for pacifying Rahu-Ketu afflictions.
When all seven planets (Sun through Saturn) are hemmed between Rahu and Ketu in a birth chart, it creates the dreaded Kaal Sarpa Dosha. This causes recurring obstacles, delayed success, and serpent-related fears. Nag Panchami puja is one of the primary Vedic remedies for this Dosha — devotees perform Naga Abhishekam, chant Nag Stotra, and offer milk to Naga murtis.
Rahu causes confusion, obsession, and worldly illusion. Ketu causes detachment, spiritual crisis, and past-life karmic blocks. Worshipping Nagas on Panchami directly addresses the serpent nodes in your Kundali. Astrologers recommend Nag Panchami as the ideal day for Sarpa Dosha Nivaran Puja, especially for those running Rahu or Ketu Mahadasha/Antardasha periods.
On Nag Panchami, avoid digging the earth, cutting with iron tools, and — most importantly — never feed milk to live snakes. Milk offerings are only for the Naga idol or image.
Ploughing, digging, or cutting the earth is strictly prohibited on Nag Panchami. Serpents live in underground burrows — this day honors their habitat. Farmers traditionally rest their ploughs on this day.
Cutting, frying, or chopping with iron implements is avoided. This symbolically prevents any harm to serpents. Some traditions also avoid using a needle for sewing on this day.
This is a widespread modern corruption. Live snakes are reptiles — they are lactose intolerant and CANNOT digest milk. Feeding milk to live snakes causes severe bloating, respiratory distress, and often death. The Vedic instruction is to offer milk to the Naga MURTI (idol/image) only. Feeding live snakes is animal cruelty, NOT worship.

Serpent worship protected India's agricultural ecosystem for millennia. During the monsoon, rodent populations explode and destroy crops. Snakes are the natural predator of rodents. This is applied Dharma.
Only Hindus worship serpents — it's a uniquely Indian practice. /
Serpent worship exists in virtually every ancient civilization: Greek (Asclepius — the serpent-entwined staff of healing, still the symbol of medicine), Egyptian (Uraeus — the cobra on Pharaoh's crown), Mesoamerican (Quetzalcoatl — the feathered serpent god), Chinese (Dragon/Naga worship), and Aboriginal Australian (Rainbow Serpent).
