In Vedic astrology (Jyotish Shastra), nine celestial bodies — called Grahas (ग्रह) — influence human life. Each planet rules specific qualities, rashis, days, and gemstones. Understanding them is the foundation of Jyotish.

In Vedic Astrology (Jyotish Shastra), the term Nava Grahatranslates to "Nine Cosmic Influencers." These are not just physical planets, but profound cosmic energies that capture and project specific light frequencies onto our lives. The Nava Graha consists of seven visible planets—Sun (Surya), Moon (Chandra), Mars (Mangal), Mercury (Budha), Jupiter (Guru), Venus (Shukra), and Saturn (Shani)—along with two shadow planets (Chhaya Grahas) known as Rahu (North Node) and Ketu (South Node).
Unlike Western astrology, which considers Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, traditional Vedic astrology focuses strictly on these nine entities. Rahu and Ketu do not possess physical mass; they are mathematical points of intersection between the paths of the Sun and the Moon. However, their energetic impact is considered equally, if not more, powerful than the physical planets because they directly govern our karmic destiny, sudden life changes, and deep spiritual liberation.
The positions of these nine Grahas at the exact moment of your birth create your Kundali (Birth Chart). Through continuous planetary transits (Gochar) and specific time periods (Mahadasha and Antardasha), these planets trigger the karmic promises hidden in your chart. A strong, well-placed planet bestows its positive qualities—like Jupiter bringing wisdom and wealth, or Venus bringing love and luxury. Conversely, an afflicted planet may create obstacles. Fortunately, Vedic astrology provides powerful remedies (Upayas) such as chanting mantras, wearing specific gemstones, or performing acts of charity to pacify malefic planetary influences and enhance positive cosmic vibrations.
In classical Jyotish, Jupiter (Guru) and the Sun (Surya) are considered highly powerful and generally benefic. Jupiter rules expansion, wisdom, and fortune, while the Sun represents soul essence, vitality, and authority. However, a planet's actual power in an individual chart depends heavily on its sign placement, house lordship, and Shadbala strength.
Rahu and Ketu are shadow planets (Chhaya Grahas) representing the lunar nodes. Rahu (North Node) represents worldly obsession, sudden ambitions, technological affinity, and future karmic projection. Ketu (South Node) rules spiritual detachment, moksha, mystical insights, and accumulated past-life karma.
Classical Vedic remedies (Upayas) include daily chanting of specific planetary mantras, performing charitable actions (Daan) related to the planet's traits, fasting on the planet's associated day, and wearing natural Navaratna gemstones (such as Ruby for Sun, Emerald for Mercury) under detailed, professional astrological guidance.
The Moon (Chandra) governs the mind (Manas), emotional body, perceptions, and behavioral temperaments. Since our experience of happiness or distress depends entirely on our mental state, the Moon is considered the primary engine of life experience. Vedic astrology determines your Janma Rashi, Nakshatra, and Mahadasha sequences completely from the Moon's natal position.
