Not all planets in a birth chart are equal. A Sun in Aries has vastly different power than a Sun in Libra. A Jupiter with Saturn's aspect is fundamentally different from one receiving a Moon's aspect. Shadbala is Vedic astrology's precise mathematical answer to the question: exactly how strong or weak is each planet in this chart?

Figure 1: An ancient astronomical mandala outlining the six sources of planetary strength (Shadbala) where each planet's position, time, and direction are mathematically quantified.
Shadbala (ṣaḍbala, "six strengths") is the most comprehensive system of planetary strength measurement in Vedic astrology, first described in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and elaborated upon in texts like Saravali and Phala Deepika. It quantifies planetary strength in units called Rupas and their fractions called Virupas (1 Rupa = 60 Virupas).
Each planet is evaluated across six independent dimensions of strength. The total Shadbala score determines whether a planet is strong enough to fully deliver its promised results in the natal chart. Planets with inadequate Shadbala may promise wonderful Yogas but fail to deliver them fully — while planets with excellent Shadbala amplify both their positive and negative significations.
Minimum required Shadbala scores differ by planet: Sun needs 390 Virupas; Moon 360; Mars 300; Mercury 420; Jupiter 390; Venus 330; Saturn 300. Planets below their minimum are considered too weak to fully deliver results.
The strength a planet gains from its position in the zodiac. Highest Sthana Bala comes from being in own sign (Swa), exaltation (Uchcha), Moolatrikona, or friendly sign. A planet in its exaltation sign receives maximum Sthana Bala — equivalent to being the most prepared and capable for the task at hand.
Each planet gains maximum directional strength (Dig Bala) in a specific house direction. Jupiter and Mercury gain it in the East (Ascendant), Venus and Moon in the North (4th house), Saturn in the West (7th house), and Sun and Mars in the South (10th house). A planet with high Dig Bala has an unobstructed channel to express its energy in life.
Strength derived from time — the exact moment of birth. Kala Bala includes: whether the native was born during day or night (benefics gain during day; malefics gain during night), the birth Paksha (waxing/waning moon), Hora (planetary hour at birth), and the Maasa (birth month). Sun, Jupiter, and Venus are stronger during daytime births; Moon, Mars, and Saturn are stronger in nighttime births.
Strength derived from a planet's actual motion. Planets in retrograde motion (Vakri) paradoxically receive maximum Cheshta Bala — as if they are exerting extra effort against the natural current of the cosmos. Direct-motion planets receive proportional strength based on their speed relative to their mean motion. Stationary planets (about to go retrograde or direct) receive moderate strength.
This is the fixed, inherent natural strength each planet carries regardless of chart placement — determined solely by the planet itself. It is the most straightforward Bala: Sun (60 Virupas), Moon (51.43), Venus (42.85), Jupiter (34.28), Mercury (25.71), Mars (17.14), Saturn (8.57). The Sun, as the cosmic king, has the highest natural strength; Saturn, the servant, has the lowest.
Strength (or weakness) derived from the aspects a planet receives from other planets. Benefic aspects (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, strong Moon) add to Drig Bala; malefic aspects (Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu) reduce it. A planet receiving full aspect from Jupiter is considered highly dignified and protected. A planet receiving full aspect from Saturn is pressured, tested, and slowed.
Beyond the six main Balas, Vedic astrology uses two derived metrics to determine the nature of a planet's results:
Measures the beneficial strength of a planet — how much positive, supportive, and growth-producing results it can deliver. Higher Ishta Bala = stronger ability to produce good results, luck, and blessings in the themes it governs.
Measures the malefic strength — how much difficulty, obstruction, or negative results a planet can produce. A planet with high Kashta Bala creates obstacles in its governed areas. The ideal chart has high Ishta Bala and low Kashta Bala across all planets.
Our Shadbala calculator computes all six planetary strengths for your exact birth details and ranks which planets are strong enough to fully deliver their results.
