In the blazing presence of the Sun — the king of the cosmic court — other planets can lose their voice. When a planet comes too close to the Sun in the zodiac, it enters a state called Asta (combustion): its light dims, its energy weakens, and its significations in life are suppressed. This is one of the most important — and most overlooked — principles in Vedic chart analysis.
Asta(Sanskrit: to set, to disappear) refers to a planet that is so close to the Sun in the zodiac that its light is lost in the Sun's brilliance. Just as a star disappears in daylight when the Sun rises, so too does a planet's independent influence fade when it comes within a certain orb of the Sun.
The ancient texts describe the Sun as a king — magnificent, powerful, and ego-centric. When another planet approaches too closely, it is as if a minister approaches the throne too boldly and is metaphorically "burned" into silence by royal fire. The combust planet cannot express its independent agenda; it becomes subservient to the Sun's agenda (self, ego, authority).
Combustion is measured by the degree of angular separation between a planet and the Sun. Each planet has its own combustion threshold (called "Diptamsha" — the zone of brilliance). The tighter the conjunction, the more severe the combustion. A planet within 1° of the Sun is considered deeply combust (called Dagdha — burnt).
| Planet | Combustion Zone | Key Life Effects |
|---|---|---|
| Moon (Chandra) | Within 12° | New Moon phase. Moon loses emotional receptivity; native may lack nurturing instincts or have strained relationship with mother. |
| Mercury (Budha) | Within 14° (direct) / 12° (retrograde) | Most commonly combust planet (always close to Sun). Retrograde Mercury combust is considered stronger (less afflicted) paradoxically. |
| Venus (Shukra) | Within 10° (direct) / 8° (retrograde) | Combust Venus in 7th or 2nd house delays marriage or creates relationship challenges. The beauty and luxury of Venus dims. |
| Mars (Mangala) | Within 17° | Combust Mars can create rash, uncontrolled energy or anger turned inward. Ambition is present but expression is difficult. |
| Jupiter (Guru) | Within 11° | Combust Jupiter reduces wisdom, good fortune, and spiritual grace. Children and teachers may be distant or absent in the native's life. |
| Saturn (Shani) | Within 15° | Combust Saturn can indicate difficulty with discipline, authority, and longevity. The karmic lessons Saturn normally teaches become blurred. |
* Rahu and Ketu do not combust. The Sun itself cannot combust (it is the source of combustion).
The effects of combustion are experienced through the significations of the affected planet. Here is what each combust planet typically affects in the native's life:
Emotional sensitivity blocked. Mother relationship may be difficult. Mind is often restless, seeking the Sun's (father's) approval. Fear of public exposure.
Communication challenges — speaking truth may feel dangerous. However, Mercury-Sun conjunction also creates the powerful 'Budha-Aditya Yoga' if well-placed.
Romance and beauty suppressed. Marriages may be delayed or unconventional. Native may not realize their own attractiveness or undervalue relationships.
Wisdom suppressed by ego. The native may have good knowledge but struggle to teach or advise effectively. Guru figures may be absent or authoritarian.
Physical energy difficult to direct. Can manifest as suppressed aggression, health issues with blood or head, or reckless courage. Courage without direction.
Discipline problems in youth. Career may build very slowly. However, if Saturn owns favorable houses, combustion may reduce its malefic nature.
While combustion weakens a planet, Vedic astrology provides several remedies to strengthen the combust planet's energy:
Chanting the Beej Mantra of the combust planet on its ruling day and hour strengthens its energy. E.g., 'Om Budhaya Namah' for combust Mercury on Wednesdays.
Wearing the planetary gemstone (Ratna) energizes the combust planet. Combust Jupiter → Yellow Sapphire; Combust Venus → Diamond or White Sapphire.
Donating items associated with the planet on its ruling day. Combust Moon → donate milk, rice, or silver on Mondays. Combust Saturn → sesame and iron on Saturdays.
Since the Sun is the source of combustion, propitiating the Sun (Surya Puja, Arghya at sunrise) can reduce the hostile energy of the Sun-planet conjunction.
