Within the subtle body that parallels the physical, ancient Vedic anatomists mapped a network of 72,000 channels called Nadis — rivers through which Prana (life force) flows. Of these, three are the master channels that determine the quality of every breath you take, every thought you think, and every state of consciousness you can access. These are Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna.

Figure 1: A sacred anatomical illustration of the human subtle body showing Ida Nadi (cooling lunar energy) and Pingala Nadi (heating solar energy) spiraling around the central Sushumna Nadi.
The Sanskrit word Nadimeans "tube," "channel," or "river." In yogic science, Nadis are the subtle energy pathways through which Prana (life force) circulates throughout the subtle body (Pranamaya Kosha). They are distinct from the physical nervous system or blood vessels, though they have corresponding correlates — Ida corresponds to the parasympathetic nervous system, Pingala to the sympathetic nervous system, and Sushumna to the central nervous system's spinal cord.
The Goraksha Sataka mentions 72,000 Nadis; the Shiva Samhita mentions 350,000. Of these, 14 are considered primary, and of the 14, three are supreme. These three — Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna — all originate at the Muladhara Chakra (base of spine) and terminate at the Ajna Chakra (third eye), where they meet at the Triveni Sangam (triple confluence) — the yogic equivalent of Prayagraj where the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati converge.
Nadi Shodhana Pranayama (alternate nostril breathing) is the classical practice for purifying and balancing the Ida and Pingala Nadis. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika prescribes three months of daily Nadi Shodhana practice before attempting any advanced pranayama or meditation techniques.
Sit comfortably in Padmasana or Sukhasana. Bring the right hand to Vishnu Mudra (fold index and middle finger, use thumb and ring finger for nostril control).
Close the RIGHT nostril with the right thumb. Inhale slowly through the LEFT nostril for 4 counts. This activates Ida (lunar, cooling energy).
Close BOTH nostrils gently (Kumbhaka/retention) for 4 or 8 counts. Prana is held and distributed through both Nadis simultaneously.
Release the RIGHT nostril, keeping LEFT closed. Exhale slowly through the RIGHT for 8 counts. One half-cycle complete.
Now inhale through RIGHT (Pingala activation) for 4 counts, retain, exhale through LEFT for 8 counts. One complete cycle done. Repeat 10-20 cycles.
