An ideal home is a microcosm of the universe. By aligning the various rooms of your house with their corresponding cosmic elements and directions, you turn your home into an energetic sanctuary that naturally attracts health, abundance, and peace.
Figure 1: The 9-Grid Vastu Home Layout (Vastu Purusha Mandala) — detailing the optimal directional zones for room placements to harmonize domestic energy flows with cosmic elements.
In Vastu, a house layout is mapped as a 9x9 grid representing the **Vastu Purusha Mandala**. The center of this grid is the **Brahmasthan** — the hollow core of the house representing the space element.
Each of the four cardinal directions (North, East, South, West) and the four corner directions (Northeast, Southeast, Southwest, Northwest) is ruled by a specific natural element and a planetary deity. Placing a room in a conflicting quadrant causes severe energetic friction.
Explore the ideal quadrant, element correspondence, and structural science for each core room of your home.
The main door is where cosmic energy enters the house. It should be the largest door in the house, highly illuminated, decorated with auspicious symbols (Swastika, Om), and completely free of shoe racks or garbage bins right at the threshold.
The Northeast is ruled by Lord Shiva and Jupiter, bringing high spiritual vibrations. Place deities facing West or South, so you face East or North while praying. Never place a puja room under a staircase, adjacent to a toilet, or in the bedroom.
The Southeast is ruled by the fire element. Position the cooking stove so that you face East while preparing meals. Avoid placing the sink (water) and the stove (fire) adjacent to each other, as conflicting elements create high family friction.
Southwest provides the solid earth energy needed for the head of the family, ensuring stability, power, and long marriage bonds. Sleep with your head pointing toward the South (never North). Keep heavy wardrobes or lockers in the Southwest part of the room.
Toilets represent waste disposal and must never occupy the sacred Northeast or Southwest zones. Keep the toilet seat facing North or South. Always keep the bathroom door closed to prevent negative damp energy from leaking into other spaces.
The absolute center of your home represents the **Brahmasthan** — the space element. According to ancient architect Vishwakarma, this area must always remain completely open, clean, light, and empty.
Constructing a heavy concrete pillar, a toilet, a kitchen stove, or keeping heavy boxes in the Brahmasthan blocks the energetic core of the house. It is equivalent to putting a weight on the human heart, triggering sudden heart problems, acute domestic depression, and blocked cash flow.
