The name you give your child will be spoken, whispered, called out in joy and worry, thousands of times throughout their life. In Vedic tradition, the Namakarana Samskara (naming ceremony) was one of the most carefully considered acts of parenthood — attended by an astrologer, a priest, and the extended family, all working together to choose a name that harmonized with the child's birth Nakshatra, planetary positions, and family lineage.
The Namakarana Samskara is the 3rd of the 16 Vedic Samskaras (rites of passage) — performed on the 11th or 12th day after birth (when the mother has completed the initial period of purification). The birth horoscope is cast by the family Jyotishi, who identifies the birth Nakshatra and determines the auspicious first syllable from which the name must begin.
The child is bathed, dressed in new clothes, and placed in the lap of the father or maternal uncle. The name is whispered into the child's right ear (the right ear is associated with the Sun and masculine principle — authority and direction). The priest chants the Namakarana mantra and the family repeats the name aloud for the first time. In some traditions, this is the moment when the child's soul officially "recognizes" the name as its vibrational identity in this lifetime.
The most important determinant in Hindu baby naming is the birth Nakshatra(the lunar mansion occupied by the Moon at the time of birth). Each Nakshatra has four Padas (quarters), each associated with specific syllables. The name should ideally begin with the syllable matching the baby's Nakshatra Pada.
