Figure 1: Cosmic Gochar diagram — showing real-time planetary orbits (transits) passing through the 12 signs relative to your natal Moon (Chandrama Rashi).
In Western astrology, horoscopes and transits are calculated from the Sun sign. However, classical Vedic texts like Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Phala Deepika explicitly mandate calculating Gochar from the natal Moon sign (Chandra Rashi).
The Moon governs Manas (mind, perception, and emotional body). Whatever happens in the physical world is ultimately processed through your emotional state. Counting houses from the Moon sign reveals how transiting planetary rays will directly alter your psychological comfort, health, financial security, and relationships.
"All transits of planets yield results only when calculated with respect to the position occupied by the Moon at the time of birth. The Moon is the pivot of human experience."
| Planet Lord | Transit Speed per Sign | Favorable Houses (Moon) | Key Event Triggered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jupiter (Guru Transit) | ~12 Months per Sign (12-Year Cycle) | 1st, 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th from Moon | Marriage, childbirth, academic honors, corporate elevation, spiritual initiation. |
| Saturn (Shani Transit) | ~30 Months per Sign (30-Year Cycle) | 3rd, 6th, 11th from Moon | Career endurance, structural building, house purchase, Sade Sati purging. |
| Rahu & Ketu Transits | ~18 Months per Sign (Retrograde Motion) | Rahu: 3rd, 6th, 11th | Ketu: 3rd, 6th, 11th | Foreign travel, sudden career shifts, technological expansion, spiritual awakening. |
| Mars (Mangala Transit) | ~45 Days per Sign (Faster when Direct) | 3rd, 6th, 11th from Moon | Property purchase, athletic victories, technical launches, surge in energy. |
~12 Months per Sign (12-Year Cycle)
✅ Favorable Houses (Moon):
1st, 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th from Moon
⚠️ Difficult Houses (Moon):
3rd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, 12th from Moon
Jupiter's transit is the most benefic in Jyotish — expanding wisdom, prosperity, and divine grace. Its transit over the 2nd (wealth), 5th (children/intellect), 7th (marriage), 9th (luck), or 11th (gains) brings landmark promotions, childbirth, weddings, and spiritual breakthroughs.
~30 Months per Sign (30-Year Cycle)
✅ Favorable Houses (Moon):
3rd, 6th, 11th from Moon
⚠️ Difficult Houses (Moon):
1st, 2nd, 4th, 8th, 12th from Moon (Sade Sati & Dhaiya)
Saturn's 2.5-year transit per sign provides structural reality checks. Transit over 3rd, 6th, and 11th awards massive financial victory over obstacles. Transit over 12th, 1st, 2nd forms 7.5-year Sade Sati; transit over 4th or 8th forms Dhaiya.
~18 Months per Sign (Retrograde Motion)
✅ Favorable Houses (Moon):
Rahu: 3rd, 6th, 11th | Ketu: 3rd, 6th, 11th
⚠️ Difficult Houses (Moon):
1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 12th
The shadow nodes move perpetually backward. Rahu's transit creates intense ambition, foreign opportunities, or sudden disruption. Ketu's transit triggers detachment, research breakthroughs, spiritual shifts, or sudden endings.
~45 Days per Sign (Faster when Direct)
✅ Favorable Houses (Moon):
3rd, 6th, 11th from Moon
⚠️ Difficult Houses (Moon):
1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 12th
Mars acts as the quick executioner. It activates energy, ambition, and physical action wherever it transits. Transit over the 4th, 7th, or 8th from Moon (Ashtama Mangal) requires extra caution regarding conflicts, surgery, or property deals.
Condition: Transiting Moon is in 1st, 6th, or 11th house from natal Moon at sign entry
Highest auspiciousness. Transiting planet delivers 100% positive results and protects against minor afflictions.
Condition: Transiting Moon is in 2nd, 5th, or 9th house from natal Moon at sign entry
High beneficence. Brings financial stability, family happiness, and smooth progress.
Condition: Transiting Moon is in 3rd, 7th, or 10th house from natal Moon at sign entry
Moderate results. Requires personal effort and physical labor to achieve goals.
Condition: Transiting Moon is in 4th, 8th, or 12th house from natal Moon at sign entry
Challenging phase. Transiting planet manifests stress, delays, or financial hurdles regardless of general sign placement.
Vedha occurs when a transiting planet in an auspicious house is obstructed by another planet sitting in a corresponding "Vedha house". E.g., Sun transiting 3rd house (benefic) is blocked if another planet transits 9th house. (Exception: Sun and Saturn do not cause Vedha between each other as father-son).
Formulated by legendary astrologer Shri K.N. Rao, major life events (like marriage, childbirth, career promotion) CANNOT occur unless transiting Saturn and transiting Jupiter SIMULTANEOUSLY aspect or occupy the relevant house and house lord activated in Dasha.
Dasha Context: Native was running Venus-Venus Dasha (Venus rules 7th house).
Transit Context: Saturn entered Aquarius (12th house from natal Moon) forming 1st phase Sade Sati.
In Vedic psychology, the Moon (Chandra) represents your mind (Manas), emotional body, and lived personal experience. The Sun represents the abstract soul purpose (Atma). Because humans experience life through thoughts and emotions, transits from the Moon sign reflect actual felt reality and psychological impact with vastly superior accuracy.
Vedha occurs when a planet transiting a favorable house is blocked by another planet transiting a specific 'counter-house'. For example, if Jupiter transits the favorable 5th house, but another planet simultaneously transits the 11th house, the positive fruits of Jupiter's transit are obstructed (Vedha) during that overlapping duration.
Double Transit Theory states that major life milestones — such as marriage, birth of a child, or major career promotion — can ONLY manifest when BOTH transiting Saturn and transiting Jupiter simultaneously aspect or occupy the relevant house and house lord in your chart.
Ashtakavarga measures a sign's energetic receptivity (Bindus from 0 to 8). Even if Saturn transits a difficult house from the Moon, if that sign has 30+ Sarvashtakavarga Bindus (and 5+ Saturn Bindus), Saturn will deliver constructive discipline and wealth instead of destruction.
Saturn (Shani) spends ~2.5 years in each sign (30 years per full zodiac loop), making its transit the most structurally defining. Rahu and Ketu spend 18 months per sign, while Jupiter spends 12 months.
When a planet turns retrograde during transit, its energy intensifies and turns inward. It revisits themes from previous months, re-opening pending decisions, contract re-negotiations, or health reviews before moving forward again.
No. The Mahadasha operates as the primary director (70-80% predictive weight), while Gochar operates as the seasonal weather (20-30% weight). A strong benefic Mahadasha protects you during difficult transits, turning what could have been a catastrophe into a minor temporary inconvenience.
Moorti Nirnaya evaluates the exact position of the Moon at the moment a major planet (like Jupiter or Saturn) enters a new zodiac sign. Depending on whether the Moon sits in 1/6/11 (Gold), 2/5/9 (Silver), 3/7/10 (Copper), or 4/8/12 (Iron) from your natal Moon, it classifies the overall flavor of that entire 1 to 2.5-year transit.
Our free Gochar Transit tool computes real-time planetary positions and predicts their specific effects from your natal Moon sign.
