Your birth chart is a frozen moment — the cosmic snapshot at the moment of your birth. But the planets never stop moving. Gochar is the ongoing story: the living conversation between the sky above and the chart within you. Every planetary transit activates a chapter of your life.
Gochar (literally "planetary passage") refers to the real-time movement of planets through the zodiac after your birth. While your natal chart (Janma Kundali) shows your inherent destiny and karmic blueprint, Gochar shows when that destiny manifests. Think of your natal chart as the script of a play — and Gochar as the direction that determines which act is being performed right now.
In Vedic astrology, transits are calculated from the position of the natal Moon (Chandra Rashi) — not the Sun sign as in Western astrology. This is because the Moon represents your mind, emotions, and lived experience. The Moon sign is your experiential lens through which all planetary energies are filtered. This fundamental difference makes Vedic transit prediction far more personalized and precise than Sun-sign horoscopes.
Jupiter's transit is the most benefic — it expands the energy of whichever house it passes through. Jupiter takes 12 years to complete the zodiac. Its transit over the 1st, 5th, 7th, 9th, or 11th from the Moon (Chandrama Rashi) is considered particularly auspicious — a period of growth, opportunity, and spiritual deepening.
Saturn's transit is the most structurally significant. Its famous 7.5-year transit over the 12th, 1st, and 2nd signs from the Moon is called Sade Sati — a period of karmic testing, delays, and spiritual maturation. However, Saturn rewards discipline and hard work. Its transit over the 3rd, 6th, and 11th from the Moon is considered powerful for victory over enemies and financial gains.
The lunar nodes (Rahu and Ketu) always move in retrograde and take 18 months to transit each sign. Their transit creates obsessive focus (Rahu) and spiritual withdrawal (Ketu). Rahu transiting over the natal Moon, Ascendant, or Sun can bring sudden disruptions, international travel, or unconventional events. Ketu's transit often coincides with detachment, loss, and spiritual turning points.
Mars transits quickly — about 45 days per sign when direct, but can stay in a sign for up to 6 months when retrograde. Mars activates energy, ambition, and conflict wherever it transits. Its transit over the 4th, 7th, and 8th houses from the natal Moon is traditionally considered difficult (called 'Ashtama Mangal') — a period requiring caution in property, relationships, and health.
Ashtakavarga is one of Vedic astrology's most sophisticated transit analysis tools. Each planet contributes "benefic points" (called Bindu) to every sign based on its relationship to 8 specific reference planets. A transit through a sign with 4 or more Bindus is generally favorable; 3 or fewer Bindus indicates a challenging transit period.
Sarvashtakavarga is the combined total of all 8 planetary Ashtakavarga grids — giving an overall strength map of each sign. Signs with high Sarvashtakavarga scores (above 28-30) are particularly receptive to positive transit results. This system transforms binary "good/bad transit" thinking into a nuanced, quantitative model unique to Vedic astrology.
The classical method for reading Gochar in Vedic astrology involves layering multiple lenses simultaneously:
Count which house each transiting planet occupies from your natal Moon. This is the primary lens.
Also count from the Lagna. Planets affecting the same house from both Lagna and Moon simultaneously create double-strength results.
Count from natal Sun for general life results, especially career and authority matters.
The most powerful events occur when a Gochar matches the Mahadasha or Antardasha planet. Called 'double transit theory', popularized by K.N. Rao.
Check the Bindu (point) score of the transiting sign. Higher scores amplify the transit's positive effects.
A transiting planet aspecting its natal position is significant. E.g., Jupiter returning to its natal sign (Jupiter return) is often a year of major personal growth.
